Orange and Lemon

Meet John Lemon.

This wonderful gift from a friend reminds me of a slice of lemon. I fell in love with it the second I saw it and I was willing to carry it for three blocks, hugging it tight to my chest. It just occurred to me that we don't have anything bright yellow at home, and the stool perfectly added a spot of sunshine in our space. The light dip in the middle is just the right amount of softness to make it fit with our mostly mid-century pieces (and the wallflowers).

Orange and Lemon.

W had the brilliant idea to match it with our orange Papa Bear, and what do you know, it also makes for a perfect footstool. Perfect height, and once again, the slight curve will make you sigh. Dreamy, comfy sigh. I'm never getting up.

the art of watching movies: house rama

House RCA gives the royal treatment to films much ignored by the Hollywood-crazed crowd.

Design that makes the hand tremble because it's not just a politely-posh lobby with bold, erratic art on the wall; it's a movie house, a film theater, not a crowded mall cineplex. House RCA is a boutique cinema in Bangkok that only screens alternative cinema (indie and art films from all over the world) in its two theaters but the more hardcore alternative here is the hotel gloss of its architecture and layout.

The space, physical and emotional, is quite overwhelming. Leather-bound armchairs and sofas are scattered around the lobby right in front of the ticketing area. Go further more to your left and you will see a DVD Library and a cafe. At the time that we were there, a photo exhibit of Thai film Eternity (we caught the Director's Cut version) has spilled onto the cafe so we decided to have coffee with its actors Ananda Everingham and Ploy Chermarn.

A long hallway beside the cafe leads to the theaters but what took us by surprise was the art exhibit outside the theater doors. Surprising. Irreverent. Playful.

See. Space. So much of it (dedicated to film and art), it makes our hearts burst.

So here is our blog's mantra: We like to jump in the middle of things because design and art is just that, the throbbing space of cleverness and ingenuity in the middle of things. It is especially more fulfilling to find them where not a lot bother to look.

Watch this space.

To get to House RCA, take the BTS to Asok Station, and then transfer to the MTR to get to Petchaburi Station. From there, take a cab to RCA Plaza.
